Tall and Handsome!

ADOPTED! Dutch is quite a boy. Just turned four and retired after a hock break, this boy is tall and lanky. Dutch is good with the little critters once he knows they are part of the family and is learning his house manners now in foster care. He is being fostered now with a male greyhound companion and young children.

Dutch is anxious to become part of a family. Photo coming soon.

Cookie!
Cookie is a pretty, 2 year old brindle girl. This girl broke a hock on her 11th race and so is already retired. Very distinctive brindle markings make her look so lovely. Cookie should be workable with cats and other dogs.  Cookie needs a foster home.

Oh Carla!

Carla is a young, fun girl who loves to snuggle and absolutely adores people. She might be workable with other dogs but is not a girl who will live with cats. Carla had a laparoscopy spay and all her medical and is ready for a forever home.

Meet Baby

Baby is a big, beautiful red brindle girl who loves everyone and everything. Baby is great with cats, she is very loving. This girl had quite a racing career running in grade A races. She is finally retired and awaiting her new forever home.

  • Adoption Process

Thank you for expressing interest in Greyhound Pets of America/Southern Nevada.  We are a fully volunteer operated chapter of a national non-profit organization dedicated to finding homes for retired racing greyhounds.  Most of us work full-time in addition to our work with the greyhounds,  so please forgive us if we are not always available at the moment you call.  Please leave us a message or email us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

On this website you can access a question and answer section entitled, " About Greyhounds", addressing some of the most common questions about greyhounds. When you complete the adoption application be sure to carefully read the "Adoption Requirements" section which also provides insight into our adoption process.  After an application is returned to us, you can expect a phone call from a volunteer adoption placement representative to discuss your application and give you additional information about ex-racing greyhounds.

Greyhound Pets of America - Southern Nevada incurs considerable expense with every Greyhound that passes through its adoption program. The adoption fee is $325.00. This adoption fee assists and allows us to make the following provisions for these wonderful pets: It helps to cover a full physical examination from the veterinarian, all vaccinations, the spaying or neutering, teeth cleaning, tick testing, worming, heartworm test, new safety collar and lead, I.D. tag, placement package, transportation from the track and dog food for the foster program.

Additional expenses such as photocopies, phone bills, extra veterinarian costs, etc. are covered through these adoption fees and through our constant fundraising efforts.

GPA-SN strives to adopt out healthy greyhounds, and as with any animal purchase or adoption, continued or on-going medical assistance can not be offered.

Please note that it is our policy that we do not adopt to families with children under the age of six.

  • Home Visit

Next, we will conduct a home visit during which we will bring one or more of our own greyhounds or a foster greyhound along to give you an opportunity to see and spend time with a greyhound in person! This is when you can learn how retired racers are different from other home raised dogs you've known.  During the home visit we will be looking for potential problems concerning the dog's safety and comfort, sometimes suggesting ways to resolve them, as well as getting to know more about you , your family,
your pets and your lifestyle. This important process allows us to match personality & behavior traits to what an applicant wants in a dog.  Our success rate at making the right match between greyhound and adopter, the first time around, is very high.

Some people may feel that this is a lot to go through, but we believe that getting a dog is a major commitment and adjustment. We care about each and every greyhound, and only want them to go into homes where both they and their new owners will be happy.

  • Greyhound Adoption Books

There are excellent books with additional information to help you decide if a greyhound is the right choice for you. We recommend reading:

"Adopting The Retired Racing Greyhound" by Cynthia Branigan
"Retired Racing Greyhounds For Dummies" by Lee Livingood
"Greyhounds" by Carolyn Coille
"Childproofing Your Dog"by Brian Kilcommons
